WORTH was my "thesis film" and the culmination of my one-year filmmaking trade-school program. When we went into production, we had only been in school a few months and none of the crew (my classmates) had been on set before--including myself. We also had to find a way to make our prisoner of war appear as if he had spent several weeks in a cell despite the fact we only had the location for one day. Suddenly, I found myself at the helm with a steep challenge ahead and no experience. We had to start at the end... I asked my actor to grow out his beard and hair for weeks in advance of filming. On the day of filming we arrived on set and immediately began tallying the wall with erasable chalk. We had replicas of his clothes, so we could have one with stains and one that was cleaner. We began filming... backwards. We started with the climactic, final prison scene with the lead's hair and beard fully grown, face bruised and bloody, garments stained, and a wall filled with tallies. As we moved backward through time and forward through the day we progressively erased tallies, trimmed his beard and hair, and morphed stains and bruises. Over the course of one long day, we shot five scenes--all with varied conditions--and ended the day with our actor freshly cut and shaved and a wall void of tallies. We made the day and made the film. It may not be amazing, but I remain impressed with how we rose to the challenge on our first (long) day on the job. |

Teaser
The short film WORTH weaves scenes of flashback and reflection, so it felt only right to embed the same themes into the teaser. Here, we utilized sequences playing backwards to evoke reflection and regret.
